What is Pilates?
Pilates is a method of body conditioning based on the work of Joseph Pilates (1880-1967). Joseph Pilates called his method The Art of Contrology which refers to the way that the method encourages the use of the mind to control the muscles. It focuses on strengthening the core postural muscles of the body, which stablilise the torso and improve flexibility and strength for the body without building bulk. The method also involves concentration and the coordination of breath and movement, thereby helping to balance body and mind. The result is a more balanced body with increased strength and flexibility, thereby enabling the body to move more efficiently and effectively.
What are the benefits of Pilates?
Some of the benefits of Pilates can include:
A stronger more flexible spine and body
Increased joint mobility and strength
Improvement in posture
Increased muscle tone
Lowered stress and tension levels
Is Pilates suitable for anyone?
Yes, Pilates is suitable for everyone regardless of age and ability.
I have a medical history which I think may affect my ability to start Pilates. Is Pilates safe for me?
Yes, Pilates is safe although all clients with any previous or existing medical conditions need to seek professional medical approval prior to starting any classes at Pilates Wirral. If necessary and with your permission, Andrew can then liaise with them in order to devise a suitable Pilates conditioning programme.
What can I expect in my first session at Pilates Wirral?
Andrew will review your completed health questionnaire and if necessary ask more specific questions relating to any previous or existing medical conditions. It is essential to learn the fundamentals of Pilates prior to progressing to any more advanced exercises. Many of these will be discussed and Andrew will then assess your postural needs through observations and a range of basic Pilates exercises.
How often should I practice Pilates?
In this respect, Pilates is the same as any other form of exercise in that the more you practice it, the quicker and sooner you will see and feel the benefits. Most clients at Pilates Wirral come once per week, some twice per week although once per fortnight is fine if you are prepared to practice some exercises in between sessions.
How long are classes and what should I wear?
All classes at Pilates Wirral last one hour. Wear something that you feel comfortable in, although it is necessary for Andrew to see movements of the spine and legs so nothing too baggy. Shoes are not suitable when practising Pilates so please just wear socks.
Do I need to bring any equipment with me?
No, all the necessary equipment is provided at Pilates Wirral.
What happens if I can't make a booked session?
Unfortunately, there is a 24 hour cancellation policy at Pilates Wirral. If for any reason you can't make your booked session, please contact Andrew as soon as possible. If 24 hours notice is not given, the full cost of the session will be charged.
